A bilingual poetry anthology, the culmination of 14 years of work, has been launched in York.

'Suniye-Sunaiye Kavya Sangrah,' fruit of a collaboration between York Indian Cultural Association and literary group SUNIYE-SUNAIYE (founded by Mahendra Verma of the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York), was launched in the city on April 26.

Twenty adult and young poets from Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as three guest poets, have contributed to the collection - with some of the contributors reciting their poems live to the audience at the launch event.

The master of ceremonies at the event was professor Avatar Matharu, chair of York Indian Cultural Association, with Harish Vashist also present.

The Lord Mayor of York, Margaret Wells, as well as Sheriff of York, Fiona Fitzpatrick, and the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain, were also in attendance.

An award in the name of Usha and Mahendra Verma, called 'The Usha and Mahendra Verma Indian Languages Annual Poetry Prize,' was also set up - to be awarded each year by SUNIYE-SUNAIYE to the best up-and-coming poet writing in an Indian language.

'Suniye-Sunaiye Kavya Sangrah' is now available to buy online from Amazon India.
