Connecticut-based Bob’s Discount Furniture announced the opening of 20 new stores this year, at a time when other retailers are shuttering locations and some of the country’s largest chain stores brace for tariffs.
Bob’s Discount Furniture has a strong presence in New England, with several locations in the Boston area. You may recognize the storefront’s cartoonish, yellow-shirted man popping out of the “O” in “Bob.”
One of the new locations will be at Dorchester’s South Bay Center, spokesperson Rick Popko said by email. The company announced in a press release the Dorchester store is scheduled to open this summer or fall, and Popko said he could not provide a more specific timeframe.
“The Grand Opening date for that store has not been set in stone,” Popko said.

The furniture retailer will also open its first store in Vermont and expand south to North Carolina, which will have six locations, the company said.
The Vermont location will have its grand opening in Williston on June 20, Popko said, with a soft opening on June 9.
“Bob’s has built a loyal customer base throughout New England, and opening a store in Vermont allows us to strengthen our connection with a region that has supported our brand for years,” chief operating office Ramesh Murthy said in a press release.
The retailer will also open locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York, including one just across the East River from Manhattan in Long Island City, Queens.
The company, which was founded in 1991, will also open a location in Sacramento, Calif.

“Bob’s Discount Furniture will tap into its robust infrastructure to support its expansion, with plans to utilize existing distribution centers and third-party delivery partners to ensure a seamless customer experience in the new markets,” the company said.
More than 10 new locations opened across the country last year, including at Somerville’s Assembly Row in the 38,163-square-foot space once occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond.
