Reuters has confirmed that a photo recently referenced by former U.S. President Donald Trump as evidence of violence against white farmers in South Africa was actually taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), not South Africa.
Trump reportedly presented the image during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, asserting it showed targeted killings of white farmers a narrative that has been consistently denied by South African officials.
However, Reuters has traced the image to a screenshot from a video filmed in the DRC in February, unrelated to any incidents in South Africa. The misidentification raises further concerns over the use of misleading visuals in political discourse and the spread of disinformation.
South African authorities have reiterated that claims of a systematic campaign against white farmers are unfounded, and have criticized the former president’s statements as inflammatory and inaccurate.
