Emily Blunt Teases Her Devil Wears Prada 2 Storyline with Meryl Streep: 'We Always Have Beef'

The Devil Wears Prada sequel promises one glamorous face-off.

It's been nearly 20 years since Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly dished out iconic quotes while looking fabulous in The Devil Wears Prada. With a sequel now underway, Emily Blunt, who played her faithful assistant Emily Charlton in the 2006 film, is teasing what fans could expect from the new film.

The actress, 42, spoke with Entertainment Tonight at the American Institute for Stuttering's 19th Annual Gala about the sequel, noting she hasn't read a script just yet but mildly addressed reports that her character Emily has moved up in the fashion world as a high-powered executive and has a rivalry with former boss Priestly.

"Why are Meryl and I so mean to each other in every movie we do?," Blunt said. "We always have beef with each other. I don’t know what it is. Let’s hope we remedy it. I’m not sure."

In addition to The Devil Wears Prada, the pair have costarred together in Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns.

"20 years ago — in a blink, it's gone by," Blunt added of the gap between the first Devil Wears Prada and reprising her role for the sequel.

As for whether her daughters Hazel, 11, and Violet, 9, whom she shares with husband John Krasinski, are excited to visit her on set, Blunt shared, "I think they would quite like to go to set. Just for the fashion."

In July 2024, the original 2006 film — which also starred Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci — was confirmed to be getting a sequel. While there haven't been official casting announcements, many of the original stars are rumored to return, stepping back into their iconic roles in the glamorous — but evolved — high-fashion journalism industry years later.

Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s book of the same name, Streep plays the powerful Miranda Priestly, Hathaway as fashion newbie Andy Sachs, Blunt as vicious assistant Emily and Tucci s Miranda’s right hand man Nigel.

According to Variety, the sequel follows Priestly “as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and as she faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.”

The movie could also incorporate plot points of the book sequel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, which was released in 2013. The novel takes place nearly a decade after the original and sees Andy and Emily come together as top magazine editors when Miranda comes sneaking back into Andy’s life.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to arrive in theaters May 1, 2026.
